The 2008 Tour was a wonderful success. We would like to add your comments about the tour here so others can better understand the purpose, scope, feelings, comradeship and ideas that come from this trip, and hear about what it's like to be a Road Scholar.

the 2008 Road Scholars group

Dear Richard, Dana and Veronica (and Cynthia and Jim, too!) Thank you for the opportunity to be one of the members of the Class of 2008 Michigan Road Scholars. It was a very rewarding, inspirational and educational experience. I have lived in the State of Michigan my entire life, in the Detroit area, Upper Peninsula (Houghton) and Ann Arbor and there was still a ton I learned about our State that I didn't know before. This is a very worthwhile program that I hope continues for many years to come. As Dan, Richard and Veronica know, I took a ton of pictures, and have attached one of our wonderful leaders.

P.S. As I suggested to Dana on the bus, many of us after this trip feel a sense of wanting to do more and reach out to the communities we have had the chance to briefly touch. A organized Road Scholars Alumni community service project that would allow all types of faculty who have been Road Scholars over the years to "get involved" may be a great way to do this. It would also serve the purpose of allowing us alums of the program to stay connected. I would be happy to discuss this further with you if you feel this is an activity that your office would be able to organize. Thanks again! Dorene

Dear Provost Sullivan, I'm writing to thank you for your on-going support of the Michigan Road Scholars Program. I have been at UofM since 1999 but I have never had much sense of the the constituencies, economies and varied cultures of the state until last week when I participated in the Road Scholars Program. I wish that every faculty member (and administrator) could have a chance to go on the Tour--it is truly phenomenal and the staff who organize and run it, Dana Sitzler, Richard Carter and Veronica Johnson, are also outstanding. I found several outreach opportunities for my department (Linguistics) as well as at least one potential research project and am generally delighted with my decision to participate. Sincerely, Robin Queen

The 2008 tour is being planned.

  • A video documenting the inaugural tour of the Michigan Road Scholars is presented here. Professor Sherman James of the School of Public Health shot the footage and he graciously allowed its use for this video. Additional interviews were added to give the viewer a unique perspective of the tour from the faculty participants. We hope that you find this videotape both informational and enjoyable.
