Dana Sitzler was the Project Manager for the 2008 tour. We hope it provided information about the state of Michigan that was new and interesting, and sparked an interest in Michigan outreach. We are here to assist your outreach efforts, such as in making contacts, and we would love to hear about any projects that came out of the tour. Please feel free to contact Dana Sitzler, Richard Carter or Veronica Johnson . A Link to the itinerary, including links to all stops, will be available soon. The 2007 Tour is Over Richard Carter was interim Project Manager for the 2007 tour. Dean Frank Ascione(MRS 99) has agreed to chair the advisory committee for the 2007 - 2008 tours. Look for the 2008 application in the fall. Alumni ReceptionThe 2006 Alumni Reception was held at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library, on north campus, located at 1000 Beal Ave, on Thursday, October 19, from 5:00 until 7:00pm. We had a good turnout, with new alumni meeting old, sharing stories and enjoying the wonderful display of the Head of State Gifts exhibit on the main floor. Elaine Didier, Ph.D., Director of the Ford Library gave an interesting presentation then tours of the Library were provided by staff. There was a surprising twist to one part of the presentation - read Joe Serwach's (MRS 05) account of finding a letter he'd written many years ago. Here are a few pictures of last years reception. (opens a new page) 2006 TourThe 2006 Michigan Road Scholars tour, from May 1 - 5, included faculty from all three University of Michigan campuses. With a focus on land and sea issues, the tour made some new stops this year exploring areas of homeland security issues in the Detroit area, and environmental research on Great Lakes issues at the Grand Valley State University’s Water Resources Institute, Great Lakes Maritime Academy in Traverse City and the Thunder Bay National Marine Underwater Sanctuary in Alpena which is operated by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. It’s the only national marine sanctuary on the Great Lakes. Of course there were the "old favorites" which include Cherry Republic, Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes National Lakeshore, Focus: Hope, the GM Truck and Bus plant, and the University’s Biological Station. We also met some outstanding, bright, creative, and talented University students at the UM Grand Rapids alumni reception on Tuesday night. They will be on campus this fall for their freshman year. Our annual fall MRS Alumni reception is scheduled for Thursday, October 19, 2006 beginning at 5pm at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library. You can view the entire itinerary of each tour, beginning with the 1999 tour, with links to some of our stops, on the Past Tour Page (link). Applications for the 2007 MRS Tour will be posted November 1, 2006. Here is an article from the Traverse City Record-Eagle about The Great Lakes Maritime Academy, one of the stops this year. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate in contacting David Lossing at either (734) 764-8029 or via email at dalossing@umich.edu |
